Men’s Lax Opens OAC Play with Dominating Win Over Mount Union

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team (2-6, 1-0 OAC) opened up their OAC schedule at home on Saturday with an afternoon matchup with Mount Union (4-5, 0-1 OAC). The Comets had quite a day, boasting 11 different scorers and pouring in 21 goals enroute to a 21-8 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital started out hot, putting up six straight goals to open the game and gaining a 7-2 advantage overall by the end of the first quarter. All six of the openers were scored by different players as Jake Belt, Mason Spaulding, Ty Chase, Max Schillig, Aaron Waltman, and Zen Kropp got their days going early. Spaulding would put another in before the period's end, assisted by Chase.

The Comets kept the goals coming in the second quarter as Montgomery got on the board for the first time along with Jacob Poole and Drew Bolen. Spaulding and Chase would add one each to their totals to make it a 5-1 quarter for Cap, heading into the half up 12-3.

The third and fourth quarters were the closest as CU outscored Mount Union 5-3 in the third and 4-2 in the fourth. Both quarters included a run of four-straight at one point. In the third, it was Chase (2), Spaulding, Belt, and Gino Nave getting the goals. Schillig, Montgomery, Kaison Durham, and Poole accounted for the fourth quarter scores. When it was all said and done, the Purple and White had poured in 21 goals enroute to a 21-8 win.

THE NUMBERS
Ty Chase chalked up a career-high four goals with two assists for a total of six points. He also picked up two ground balls and caused one turnover.

Mason Spaulding was the leading points-getter with four goals and three assists to total seven points. Additionally, he grabbed a career-high-tying six ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Jake Belt, Nathan Montgomery, Max Schillig, and Jacob Poole would each put in two goals. Montgomery got an additional three assists for five points on the day, also adding two ground balls. Schillig would go on to add a career-high six ground balls as well as two caused turnovers, while Belt totalled three ground balls and one caused turnover.

Gino Nave, Drew Bolen, Zen Kropp, Aaron Waltman, and Kaison Durham all had one goal apiece. Nave and Kropp would both add one assist as well, finishing with two points each. Nave also scooped up four ground balls and caused two turnovers, while Bolen grabbed three GBs and Kropp and Waltman each accounted for one.

Freddy Noday went 19-for-23 on the faceoff, picking up nine ground balls. He was joined on the spot by Tyler Lieu (5-of-8, 2 GB) and Jayden Walter (0-of-1).

Eric Patterson had a career day in the midfield with six caused turnovers and five ground balls, both career-highs.

James Howenstine (4 CT, 3 GB, 1 A, 1 P), Mason Patrick (1 CT, 3 GB), and Austin Yanichko (4 GB) were the main proponents on the defensive end.

Luc Kadlic (2-5) made nine saves in the cage and grabbed two ground balls.

The Comets will be back in action on Friday, playing on the road at Ohio Northern at 5 p.m.
