COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning leading to a 17-1 drumming of Miami-Hamilton on Friday afternoon. The win was the first of the year for Cap and came in their home opener.
The Comets are now 1-3 to start the year, while Miami-Hamilton slipped to 5-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams had a quiet first two innings, while the teams battled through a light rain. In the bottom of the third, the Comets struck gold, capitalizing on some Miami-Hamilton miscues to erupt for 10 runs, blowing the game open.
The first run of the day came on
Grayson Gulley's RBI single to right field that scored
Kielan LaMarr. Shortly after,
Gio Mastrorosa's fielder's choice yielded a couple of runs as Gulley scored on the play, while
Cade Anderson came around to score on a throwing error by the Harriers.
Throughout the inning additional RBIs came from
Cole Boroff, Michael Andryzszczyk, LaMarr, and
Connor Feeney.
The damage was not done there as Capital added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Boroff led off the inning with a single and then came around to score on Gulley's two-RBI triple to center field.
Robby Harrison also scored on the play after drawing a walk.
Cade Anderson then singled home Gulley before
Connor Feeney also recorded an RBI on a single up the middle to score Anderson.
The Comets kept up the pressure with an additional three runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI hits from Gulley, Anderson and
Ryne McKinney.
THE NUMBERS
Grayson Gulley,
Cade Anderson and
Cole Boroff each recorded three hits a piece to lead the way.
Connor Feeney also recorded multiple hits with two.
Gulley recorded four RBIs and three runs scored, while Anderson added two RBIs and three runs scored. Feeney was also responsible for three RBIs.
McKinney, Mastrorosa, Boroff, Andryszczyk, and LaMarr all recorded single RBIs.
ON THE MOUND
The Comets pitching staff threw a gem of a game as the cycle of five hurlers combined to allow just five hits and one run. The staff struckout four hitters and did not surrender a walk or hit a batsman.
Trevor Woodyard threw the first two innings and allowed just one hit while striking out one.
Kyle Bowles was next and pitched a solid 1-2-3 inning to earn the win. He had one punch out.
Brian Young also had a quick inning on the mound, not allowing a baserunner.
Tyler Sickles threw two innings and struckout one.
Tyler Bebout tossed a full inning and also recorded one strikeout.
UP NEXT
The baseball squad will hop on a plane on Sunday, March 3rd to travel down to Vero Beach, Florida to take part in a six-game series at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex through the spring break week.
