DANVILLE, Ky. – The Capital University baseball team (0-1, 0-0 OAC) opened up the 2024 season on the road on Friday night, paying a visit to Centre College for a three-game opening weekend featuring two matchups with Centre (1-0, 0-0 SAA) split by one with Depauw. The Comets would ultimately fall in their first game of the year, playing in a tight contest that got away in the eighth inning, ending up 14-9 in favor of the hosts.
Cap got on the board early, scoring three in the top of the second. After
Robby Harrison singled to center and drove in
Ryne McKinney,
Kielan LaMarr reached via an error which allowed
Michael Andryszczyk to score with Harrison being cut out at the plate. The third run would come shortly after on a
Ryan Brophy single to left that let LaMarr score. Centre would tie things up with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
CU was able to score two in the top of the fourth with LaMarr and Harrison both scoring on a
Cade Anderson single to center. The lead would be short lived as Centre responded with seven runs in the bottom half to make it a 10-5 ballgame.
Capital put up four more in the sixth, starting with another Anderson single to center that again drove in LaMarr and Harrison. Anderson would come around after
Connor Feeney reached on an error. Finally, McKinney singled to left, scoring
Ty Clifton and taking the deficit down to one run at 10-9. Unfortunately the Comets could not find their way around the bases and Centre sealed the deal with another run in the bottom of the sixth, adding three in the eighth as well, taking the game to a 14-9 final.
