Men’s Lacrosse Opens 2024 Season With a Loss to Sewanee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Capital University men's lacrosse team traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to take part in the Music City Challenge this weekend. In their opening game, the Comets fell to the host school Sewanee by a final score of 16-6. 

Capital is now 0-1 on the year, while Sewanee improves to 2-0. 

The hosts went ahead 2-0 before Capital's Charlie Howenstine scored CU's first goal of the season at the 7:40 mark of the first quarter. 

The Comets would close the score back to one goal minutes later as Ty Chase netted a goal off an assist from Nathan Montgomery at the 3:46 mark. 

Near the start of the second quarter, last year's leading scorer Mason Spaulding got his season account opened with an unassisted goal to make it 5-3, Sewanee. 

The Montgomer to Chase connection worked again for Capital just before halftime as Chase bagged his second goal of the game. 

After halftime, Montgomery then opened his account with an unassisted man-up goal at the 9:28 mark of the third quarter. 

Capital's final goal of the game came at the 11:52 mark of the fourth period as Howenstine netted his second of the game, this time on the man-down play. 

THE NUMBERS
Nathan Montgomery led the team with a three point evening thanks to his one goal and two assists. 

Drew Bolen led the team in ground balls, scooping up three. Gino Nave managed Capital's only caused turnover of the game. 

The Comets were out-matched at the faceoff dot as Sewanee won 20 of the 26 faceoffs. 

Luc Kadlic got his first career start in the cage and made six saves. 

UP NEXT
Capital will look to right the ship tomorrow afternoon as they play their second game of the Music City Classic in Nashville. The Comets will battle Hendrix at 1:30 p.m. central time.
