NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Capital University men's lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0 OAC) went head-to-head with Hendrix (0-2, 0-0 SAA) on Sunday afternoon on day two of the Music City Classic. Senior attackman
Mason Spaulding would score a single-game record nine goals as the Comets swept past the Warriors, 17-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital came out of the gate hot, scoring five of the first seven goals in the first quarter of the game.
Mason Spaulding would be responsible for three of those, joined by
Charlie Howenstine and
Ian Michaud. At the end of the first quarter, CU sat ahead 5-2.
The second quarter was all Comets, outscoring Hendrix 6-1, including a run of five straight to finish off the half. Spaulding scored another three, with
Jake Belt,
Freddy Noday, and
Cooper Kirda getting in on the action. Kirda's goal was the first of his career as Capital held the lead firmly in hand at the half, 11-3.
The Warriors would stage a bit of a comeback in the third quarter, scoring five straight in response to
Max Schillig's goal to open up the period. However, the Purple and White would finish the game off with a strong 5-2 fourth quarter.
Mason Spaulding put in another three, with his record-breaking moment coming at the 2:44-mark. Belt and
Aiden Manning made up the other two spots of the scoreboard, helping Cap head home with a 17-10 win.
THE NUMBERS
Mason Spaulding's nine goals marks a new single-game record for the Comets. Adding one assist, his 10 total points ranks tied for second in the single-game record books. Additionally, he tied his career high of six ground balls.
Jake Belt put up two goals and one assist for three points. He also scooped three ground balls and caused one turnover.
Freddy Noday scored one goal off of a faceoff, finishing with one point. He would go 16-for-20 (80.0%) on faceoffs, picking up eight ground balls and causing one turnover.
Charlie Howenstine had one goal, adding two assists for three points. He grabbed one ground ball.
Cooper Kirda scored his first career goal, getting his first career point in the process.
Aiden Manning,
Ian Michaud, and
Max Schillig made up their remainder of the Capital scoresheet, getting one goal each. Michaud would add two ground balls and one caused turnover, while Schillig grabbed one GB.
James Howenstine (4 GB, 2 CT) headed up the defensive side of things, joined by
Drew Bolen (3 GB, 1 CT),
Dylan Christopherson (2 GB, 1 CT),
Gino Nave (1 GB, 1 CT), and
Jackson Gantz (1 CT). Also scooping up ground balls were
Tyler Lieu (4 GB),
Martin Browder (3 GB), and
Nathan Montgomery,
Ian Zaletel,
Jacob Poole,
Anthony Carusone, and
Eric Patterson, all with one.
Luc Kadlic made three saves as he collected his first career win. His record is now 1-0.
