COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University football team suffered a 54-0 shutout at the hands of No. 4 ranked Mount Union on Saturday afternoon. With the result, Capital is now 0-8 while Mount improves to 8-0.
The Comets held strong early, trailing by just a touchdown at the end of the first quarter, but a Mount safety to start the second quarter led to an avalanche of scoring the rest of the way.
The Comets defense was able to force the Purple Raiders into four fumbles on the day, recovering two of them. First, the Purple Raider quarterback fumbled a snap, resulting in an
AJ Conti recovery, then,
Bryson Roberts stripped the Raider running back a few drives later, resulting in an
Owen Beatty recovery. The other two fumbles resulted in Mount recoveries for a loss of yards.
THE NUMBERS
Ben Owens threw for 83 yards on 11 completions, supported by
Donovan Duncan with 58 yards on five completions.
Owens led the rushing with 60 yards, followed by
Kassim Johnson with 18 and
Mac Pettigrew with 12.
Pettigrew was the leading receiver with 34 yards on three catches, followed by
Wesley Armstead with three catches for 30 yards.
AJ Conti was the leading tackler with six stops. He added the fumble recovery, a pass breakup and one QB hurry.
Bryson Roberts,
Diamonte Salley and
Cyrus Burden all had five tackles each.
Riley Fritts and
Marcus Young Jr. had four each.
Tyler Terrell sent six punts for an average of 40.3 yards per boot.
