NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University football team ventured to Muskingum University on Saturday afternoon where they succumbed to the Muskies by a final score of 51-20.
Capital is now 0-9 on the year, while Muskingum is 5-4.
Muskingum jumped out to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter, but Capital responded just before halftime. The Comets put together a 2:55 drive that ran eight plays, ending in a three-yard passing touchdown from
Ben Owens to
Josh Kucker to get Capital on the board by the break. Owens threw a 34-yard pass to
Nate Younker to set up the short score.
In the second half, Capital came out on their first possession of the half and scored on a 92-yard drive after the Comets defense stopped Muskingum on fourth down. The score came on a 34-yard pass from Owens to
Preston Hannika. Unfortunately for Cap, the Muskies blocked the ensuing PAT and returned it 98 yards for a defensive two-points making the score 30-13.
From there, Muskingum scored twice more before Capital could respond on a 64-yard passing score from Owens to
Kassim Johnson.
The hosts punctuated the game with another score, leading to the eventual 51-20 final.
THE NUMBERS
Ben Owens passed for 175 and three touchdowns on 11 completions.
Donovan Duncan added 12 yards on a pair of completions.
Kassim Johnson rushed for 47 yards and had 64 yards of receiving on his one touchdown catch.
Aaron Gilbert rushed for 20 yards on six attempts. Duncan tallied 14 yards on three tries.
Preston Hannika ended with three catches for 58 yards and a score, while
Nate Younker and
Trent Renz also had three catches as well.
Aaron Gilbert,
Josh Kucker and
Steven Alaniz also added receptions.
Defensively,
Diamonte Salley and
AJ Conti led Capital with eight tackles each.
Cyrus Burden ws in on seven stops, including a sack.
Bryson Roberts,
Bailey Johnson and
Marcus Young Jr. each had five tackles, while
Jesse Foster had four (one of which was a sack).
AJ Conti and
Bryson Roberts each forced a fumble, while one was recovered by
JT Smith.
Tyler Terrell punted three times for an average of 37.3 yards per punt. He was 2-for-3 on PAT kicks. The blocked try on Cap's second score was Terrell's first missed PAT since November 12, 2022, snapping a string of 47 consecutive made PATs.

Capital will conclude the 2024 season at home with Senior Day vs. Wilmington College on Saturday, November 16th. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. with Senior recognitions taking place around 1:00.
