Comet Trio Earn Athlete of the Week Honors

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – On Monday afternoon, three Capital University student-athletes were announced as Ohio Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week in their respective sports and positions. In football, quarterback Ben Owens was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while linebacker Cyrus Burden earned the Defensive Player of the Week accolade. In women's basketball Bri O'Connor was voted the conference's Player of the Week.

This week, both teams enjoyed success in their respective playing fields as football earned their first win of the season, triumphing over Wilmington 50-31. In that game, the Comets scored 50 points for the first time since 2018. On the other hand, the women's basketball team started their season 2-0 with a come-from-behind 84-77 win over preseason receiving votes Denison on Wednesday, and a 68-34 drubbing of Kenyon on Saturday.

Owens spearheaded the Comet offense, throwing for 270 yards and a school record tying six touchdowns on 20 completions. His six touchdown output tied him with the single-game TD record, joining Ed Garver (1957) and Thomas Wibbeler (2017, 2018) atop the program records. His six TD passes went to Nate Younker (2), Steven Alaniz (2), Josh Kucker and Finn Devine. Owens also added 55 yards of rushing on the ground.

Burden led the Comet defense in the team's first win in more than a year, finishing the game with nine tackles including two tackles for a loss and one sack. Of his nine tackles, six of them came via solo nature. This season, Burden led the Comets defense in tackles, TFLs, and sacks.

On the hardwood, O'Connor picked up right where she left off a season-ago in terms of output. In the win over Denison, O'Connor poured in a team-best 27 points on 8-of-17 shooting while also adding six rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Her efforts helped the Comets claw their way back from trailing by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter to force OT and then come away with the overtime victory. In the win over Kenyon, O'Connor played just 23 minutes and scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

The three selections of Owens, Burden and O'Connor bring the Comet athletics tally of Athletes of the Week up to 13 for the school year.

While football concluded their season this past weekend, the Comets women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, November 20th with a road game at Case Western Reserve.
