Women’s Soccer Secures OAC Tournament Spot with Shutout of Muskingum

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team (6-8-3, 4-2-2 OAC) welcomed Muskingum (3-12-1, 0-7-1 OAC) to town for their final home game of the season on Wednesday night. On a night where nearly every active player on the CU sideline got involved, the Comets would score four and shutout the Muskies for the 4-0 win and a spot in the upcoming OAC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got on the board quickly, scoring in just the fourth minute after Taylor Marcum found Lizzie Elliott making a run on the right wing. Elliott would make sure to draw some attention as she beared down on goal, freeing up Avery Hart for the simple pass and score to give Cap a 1-0 lead. Despite their best efforts including 24 total shots in the first half – 12 of which were on target – the Purple and White would not be able to net another in the first 45 minutes.

CU's second of the night finally came in the 67th minute after Capital was awarded a free kick just outside of the left end of the box. Bella Leonetti would be the one to give it a go and place it perfectly out of reach in the upper left corner for the score, making it 2-0 and opening up her account for the Comets.

It wouldn't take long after for the Purple and White to make it 3-0 as just two minutes later Hart got her second of the night, slotting it into the bottom right after receiving a pass from Maggie McGlone, originally played in by Leonetti.

The final tally of the night came in the early seconds of the 84th minute after Cap received a corner. Hannah West would take, sending the ball through the traffic in the box to find Mayci Sayre waiting on the back post. Sayre easily put it away to make it 4-0 and seal the deal for CU.

THE NUMBERS
All-in-all, the Purple and White would send 36 shots at the goal with 17 finding their mark, allowing just eight total with four on goal on the other end.

Avery Hart led the offensive efforts with two goals, her third and fourth of the season. She now has eight points, climbing into third on the team after Rachel Austin (9) and Grace Estes (9).

Mayci Sayre scored her second of the year, now with five points.

Bella Leonetti netted her first career goal, adding an assist to finish with three points on the night and six on the season. She's still tied for the team-lead with four assists.
