WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Capital University Women's Soccer team traveled down to southwest Ohio to face-off against the Wilmington Quakers, formerly undefeated in the OAC. After some back and forth to start the game,
Ryanne Michel broke the silence in the second half with an impressive goal in the 54th minute. This was quickly followed up by a goal from
Ava Spirk in the 58th minute to put the Comets up 2-0 and secure the win, despite a late penalty kick by Wilmington.
This win improves the Comets to 5-7-3 on the year and 3-1-2 in the OAC. This is the second win in a row for Capital as they hope to improve this win streak in the Battle for the Oar this Saturday at Bernlohr Stadium. The loss drops the Quakers to 6-4-5 overall and gives them their first OAC loss, making their record in the conference to 2-1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets controlled the ball for a majority of the game, holding possession for 53% of the contest despite having 5 shots on goal to Wilmington's 6. All of the action came in the second half.
Ryanne Michel found herself surrounded by defenders with the ball close to the net. She found enough room to thread the needle and send the ball through two defenders to the bottom left corner of the goal. Not long after that,
Ava Spirk was able to control the ball after a short fight for possession where she then sent the ball with some spin into the top corner of the net, just past the hands of the keeper. The Quakers barely squeezed a corner kick past the wall that was
Liv Alford in the finals minutes, but it wasn't enough to trump the dominant Comets.
THE NUMBERS
Liv Alford was a force in the net, saving the ball 5 times, notching her fourth win of the season.
Ryanne Michel found the back of the net, scoring her third goal of the season.
Ava Spirk netted 1 goal, scoring her second goal of the season.
