ADA, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team traveled to Ohio Northern University on Saturday, October 19th, where they fell by a final score of 3-1. The Comets claimed the opening set in convincing fashion via a 25-18 score, but the Polar Bears regrouped and won the final three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-14 to win the match.
Capital slips to 9-13 overall and 1-4 in the OAC, while ONU improves to 17-5 and 3-2 in the conference.
Starting the match, Capital garnered control of set one thanks to a trio of Polar Bear attacking errors, making the score 6-4, Cap. A quick leveling of the score at 6-6 then saw the Comets score four straight points led by back-to-back kills from
Larissa Smith and
Bryn Whitmer. The Comets would hang on to that lead the rest of the set, eventually creating some separation at 22-16 to establish full control.
After the first set, ONU regrouped and showed why they have been receiving votes in the national polls for much of the season by winning the next three sets on very efficient offensive outputs, hitting over .300 in the final two frames.
Capital was led offensively by
Chloe Preocanin who landed 11 kills and
Simone Daniel who finished with 10 kills.
Sophia Sobota was next for CU with eight kills.
Bryn Whitmer and
Emily Yanczura split time setting, with Yanczura finishing with 16 assists in her first career match and start. Whitmer ended with 15 assists.
At the service line,
Abby Brunner had two aces, followed by Sobota, Daniel and Yanczura with one each.
In front row defense, Capital had two team blocks – a solo one from Smith and an assisted block by Daniel and
Samaree Perkins.
In the back row,
Abby Brunner had a game-high 21 digs. Sobota finished with nine and Yanczura added six.
