WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team fell 3-1 on the road at Wilmington College on Wednesday night. The Comets claimed the third set of the night via a 25-17 score, but the Quakers won the other three 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19 to claim the victory.
Capital, now 9-14 overall and 1-5 in the OAC, put together a strong .203 hitting percentage in the match, but could not keep up with the Quakers' .341 clip on the evening. Wilmington is now 5-17 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
In the opening set, Cap found themselves trailing 19-8, but roared back with a 9-2 run that brought the score to 21-17. The run was kickstarted by a kill from
Chloe Preocanin and pushed forward by a trio of service aces from
Olivia Spillers. Unfortunately for the Purple and White, the momentum ran out of steam as the Quakers responded with enough points to claim the set win.
In the second set, Capital used a 5-1 run to take a 21-19 lead that featured kills from
Sophia Sobota,
Larissa Smith and
Simone Daniel, but the Quakers responded this time by scoring the final four points of the set to take that one.
In the third set, Capital went in front 7-3 and never looked back, claiming the set 25-17 in the end. The pivotal turning point proved to be a pair of kills from Daniel and one from Smith sandwiched around a couple of attacking errors from the Quakers.
Unfortunately, the new momentum for Capital did not sustain into the fourth set as the hosts won the set and the match.
Simone Daniel led the offense with 11 kills, followed by
Samaree Perkins with eight and
Sophia Sobota with seven.
Bryn Whitmer,
Kenadee Winters and
Emily Yanczura all saw time in the rotation as the setter, with Whitmer finishing with 19 assists, Winters with nine and Yanczura with eight.
Olivia Spillers had a dynamite night at the service line, sending seven aces over the net. She was followed by
Abby Brunner with three, Whitmer with two and Winters, Yanczura and Perkins with one each.
The Comets put together five solo blocks in the front row, with
Simone Daniel and
Larissa Smith each having two and Perkins having one.
In the back row, Brunner led the team with 14 digs, followed by Winters with seven and Spillers and Sobota with five each.
