ADA, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team scored an 86th minute winner in a 2-1 triumph on the road at Ohio Northern University to secure their first win over the Polar Bears since the 2015 season on Saturday afternoon.
Avery Hart scored the winning goal after
Ryanne Michel scored the game's opening goal in the 65th minute.
Capital is now 4-7-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the OAC, while ONU is 8-5-1 and 4-1 on the year.
The first half was rather mute between the two sides with the hosts holding a slight 4-1 advantage in shot attempts. Capital's
Liv Alford secured three saves in the half to help maintain a scoreless game at the break.
In the second half, Capital began to look for more opportunities, eventually breaking through in the 65th as
Ryanne Michel slalomed through a few defenders before sending a right-footed shot from the top corner of the box into the far side netting for the breakthrough. The goal was a big weight lifted off the shoulders of the Comets as they broke a 363-minute scoreless drought with the goal.
Now trailing for the first time in OAC play this season, the Polar Bears started to press the Comet goal and eventually leveled the match on an unassisted strike from Emma Bowman in the 84th minute.
With the score level at 1-1, Capital kept their composure and responded quickly as
Ava Spirk lofted a ball through to
Avery Hart who beat an on-rushing goalkeeper to score the eventual game-winning goal in the 86th minute.
Liv Alford made eight saves in the Capital net by the end of the match, helping preserve the Comets' win. Her counterpart in the ONU net, Morgan Moeller made just one save while being beaten twice.
