COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's volleyball team hosted the No. 11 ranked Marietta College Pioneers for Dig Pink night on Wednesday evening, falling 3-0 behind set scores of 28-26, 25-16, and 25-19.
The Comets fall to 9-12 overall and 1-3 in the conference while the Pioneers remain undefeated at 15-0 (4-0 OAC).
Capital came to play against the undefeated Pioneers, jumping out to a 4-1 lead to start the first set, eventually carrying on a 8-5 run, extending their advantage to 12-6, capped by a
Sophia Sobota service ace. At that point, Marietta responded with four straight points to trim the gap. From then on, the score stayed close, as Capital led much of the way, eventually benefitting with a 20-16 lead.
Unfortunately for Capital, Marietta erased that Comet lead and finished the match on a 3-0 run, securing the 28-16 lead.
With the first set in hand, Marietta took the next two in a row to finish off the 3-0 win.
The Comets were led offensively by
Larissa Smith and
Chloe Preocanin who each scored seven kills.
Sophia Sobota and
Abby Reed each landed six as well.
Bryn Whitmer and
Kenadee Winters shared setting responsibilities in the match with Whitmer tallying 16 assists and Winters finishing with 11.
At the net,
Samaree Perkins finished with a team-best three blocks, while
Larissa Smith and
Simone Daniel each had two swats.
Abby Brunner had a game-high 20 digs, followed by Winters who finished with 15 digs.
Bryn Whitmer completed a double-double as well ending with 12 digs.
At the service line, five Comets ended with one ace each – Whitmer, Sobota,
Olivia Spillers, Brunner and Perkins.
