WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team shot the ball at an efficient 52.9% clip in their first game of 2024 on Wednesday evening as they defeated Wilmington College 84-75 on the road.
The win pushes the Comets out to 9-3 overall and 3-2 within the extremely difficult OAC conference. Wilmington falls to 5-7 on the year and 1-4 in the conference.
Capital did everything they needed to do for the final result in the first half by shooting an electric 50% from the floor and 46% from deep en route to a 45-27 halftime lead. The leader in the first half was
Carter Combs who netted 13 points across the first 20 minutes. An early flourish of baskets saw Cap expand an early lead of 11 points after just four minutes of action to set them on their way.
In the second half, Wilmington increased their efficiency and netted 48 points, but the Comets 39 was enough to keep the Quaker comeback effort at bay. Capital's quality shooting continued through the second half, but the Comets did their damage inside the arc s they went 18-of-32 in the second 20 minutes and just 2-of-8 from range.
THE NUMBERS
Carter Combs led the way with a career-high 23 points thanks to a 9-of-15 shooting effort that included a 5-of-8 conversion rate from 3-point range. He added seven rebounds, seven assists and a block as well.
Dom Moegerle was the next leading scorer with 15 points off the bench thanks to an efficient 6-of-8 effort from the floor. He added two rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
Ryan Suever was the only other Comet in double digits, finishing with 10 points to go with his six boards and a block.
Justin Nixon and
Daryl Cooper combined for 16 points off the bench as well, while
McKane Finkenbine and
Baden Forup each finished with seven points.

Capital will return home for a difficult test this coming Saturday as they host No. 7 ranked John Carroll University for a 1 p.m. tipoff. So far this season, Capital has played two ranked opponents in the form of Case Western Reserve (No. 9) and Mount Union (No. 13).
