Women’s Soccer Drops Game to Otterbein

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team fell 2-1 at the hands of Otterbein University on Saturday night.

Capital out-shot the Cardinals 21-9, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal, but ultimately two goals against the run of play from Otterbein proved to be the difference in the end result.

The loss for the Comets sets them back to 5-5-1 (0-1 OAC) while Otterbein improves to 5-2-2 (1-0).

The Cardinals got a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of play as Cailynn Adelman tipped in a cross from Anjuli Anderson.

Despite going behind early, Capital put their foot down offensively and had the majority of opportunities, taking seven shots before halftime. Unfortunately, none would beat the Cardinal goalkeeper before the intermission.

After halftime, Capital upped their pressure and eventually leveled the game in the 55th minute. Grace Estes worked the ball down the sideline and sent a cross into the box that was controlled by Lexi Snider. Before Snider could work a shot, the ball fell to Sophia Leonetti who poked a shot into the lower left corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was Leonetti's fifth of the year and marked the first assist of the season for Estes and second helper for Snider.

Unfortunately for Capital, after several chances to grab a lead, the Cards went back in front thanks to a goal from Morgan Somers. Somers cleaned a scrum in the box after Liv Alford punched down a corner kick service.

The 2-1 lead for Otterbein held the remainder of the game and allowed Otterbein to escape with the oar.

Alford made two saves in the Comet net, while Ella Schwertfager was called into eight saves in the Otterbein goal.
