COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Lexi Snider bagged two goals and set up an eventual penalty kick, helping the Capital University women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Wittenberg University on Wednesday evening.
The win improved Capital's record to 5-4-1 through the culmination of the non-conference schedule. The remaining nine games on Cap's schedule will all take place within the OAC, beginning Saturday vs. Otterbein.
Lexi Snider put the Comets ahead in just the 13th minute of play. Snider corralled a loose ball about 30 yards from goal and after two touches forward, she curled a high shot to the back post top corner, beautifully beating the Tiger goalkeeper for her fifth goal of the season.
The lead from the Snider goal held for the remainder of the first half as Capital carried the 1-0 lead to the break.
Right from the start of the second half, the Comets came out looking to add to their lead. Within seconds of the kickoff,
Catherine Zugaro sent a shot off the crossbar and was immediately followed by a
Francesca Longano shot that caught the left post.
Despite the high pressure from the Comets to start the second half, Wittenberg found a way to level the score in the 53rd minute as Alex Hill sent a shot that beat
Liv Alford in the Comet net.
Despite the Witt goal, Capital regained their composure and kept their attack up, eventually recapturing the lead in the 73rd minute thanks to Snider's second goal of the game. Longano won the ball in the midfield and then dished it to Snider who cut inside and ripped another gorgeous right-footed shot to the back post upper corner for her second of the game and sixth of the year. The assist for Longano was her fourth of the season.
The Comets put an insurance tally on the board in the 84th minute as Snider sent a ball into the center of the box to
Grace Estes. On the turn, Estes was fouled, thus drawing a penalty kick. Estes stepped up to take the penalty and converted, scoring her seventh goal of the season.
Aside from the one ball over the top ending with the Tigers' goal, the Comet defense played well, thanks to the quality of play from
Haley Moore,
Tori Kittrell,
Taylor Marcum, and others.
Liv Alford ended with six saves in the net to keep the damage light.
Lily Winkle was called to make 12 saves in the Wittenberg goal.
