COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team (3-2-1) edged out Trine (2-2-4) in a 2-1 final on Sunday afternoon. It was a frenzy of a last five minutes with a shot going off the crossbar on either side as the Thunder tried to pull even while the Comets wished to push further ahead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital's goals came early on in this one, the Comets taking a 2-1 lead before even 15 minutes had elapsed. Both goals came from the foot of
Grace Estes.
The first took place at exactly the 11-minute mark as a pass from
Taylor Marcum on the right wing made its way into the box to
Francesca Longano who put a shot on goal, saved by the Trine goalkeeper. Estes would wind up with the rebound, squeezing a shot off between the keeper and the post to give CU the lead. Longano would be credited with an assist on the play.
Not long after, it was Estes again receiving the ball in the box and slipping it past the keeper to give Cap a 2-0 advantage in the 13th. Longano would go down with another assist as well as
Lexi Snider. Longano got the ball rolling into the box, slotting it through to Snider who then pushed it past the last defender to Estes waiting with only the keeper to beat.
Trine would get a goal back in the 29th minute off of a chip shot by Olivia Argentieri, cutting the Capital lead down to just one. It would stay 2-1 for the remainder of the half and the game despite a couple of close calls in the last five minutes. The first coming directly from a Thunder free kick that bounded off the crossbar and was cleared by the Comets. Finally – with just seconds remaining – Snider found herself in space on the other end and would have put the game away properly had it not been for a tip-save off the woodwork and away from goal.
