Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 3 Christopher Newport

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team played a defensive game plan almost perfectly against the No. 3 nationally ranked Christopher Newport University on Friday evening, eventually falling just 1-0 to the high-powered Captains team.

The Comets fall to 2-2-1 overall on the year while CNU moves forward to 6-0. The Captains have not lost in more than 51 games, having won the 2021 National Championship and falling on PKs a year ago in the NCAA tournament.

Capital's best offensive opportunities came off the feet of Catherine Zugaro and Lexi Snider – one in each half. Zugaro's opportunity came on a scramble off a corner kick, as her shot attempt drifted just to the left of the goal. Snider's came as she went on a marauding run for nearly 60 yards and her left-footed attempt caught the outside of the upper 90 netting on the goal, giving the Captains a scare midway through the second half with the game still tied at 0-0.

CNU's 27 shot attempts finally paid off as Alex Devers delivered the game-winner in the 76th minute – a left-footed strike to the bottom right corner of the net.

Capital's defensive unit consisting of Ryanne Michel, Haley Moore, Abby English, Tori Kittrell, Taylor Marcum, Mya Swearengin and more played a very good game, forcing many of the Captain's shot attempts to be blocked or drift wide or high.

However, CNU slung eight shots on goal, forcing Liv Alford to make a career-high seven saves. Nicole Ogden was credited with the other save as she cleared a shot off the line in the first half. Alford's highlight of the night came on a Madie Vincent shot in the 38th minute. Alford made a phenomenal diving stop in the upper corner of the net to keep the game scoreless at that point.
