GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Capital University women's soccer team traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan to battle with the No. 19 ranked Calvin University. There, the hosts convincingly took the result, 5-1.
The lone goal for the Comets came from
Grace Estes with quite literally the final kick of the game. Estes rounded the corner and served a shot from the right side that caught a deflection past the Calvin goalkeeper to open the Comets' account for the season. Estes' goal came with just three seconds remaining on the clock.
All-in-all, the Knights controlled the game, taking an early 2-0 lead and scoring three more times in the second half to put the result out of reach for Capital. Calvin won every statistical category on the night, other than saves.
Liv Alford made five saves in the goal for Capital to Kalex Dodge's one stop for Calvin.
Sofia Walton made her Comet debut in the final 16 minutes in goal, but did not record a save in that time.
In addition to Estes' goal, Capital's shot attempts came from
Abby English,
Lexi Snider, and two from
Catherine Zugaro.
Liz Williams (2), Maggie Smith, Anna Reimink, and Avery Mrozinski accounted for the Calvin goals.
Capital will look to get in form in the new season as they will return home to Columbus for a Tuesday night game against Ohio Wesleyan. Kickoff for that one is slated for 7 p.m. on September 5th at Bernlohr Stadium.
