COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team saw their nine-game winning streak come to a close this afternoon with a 13-5 loss at the hands of John Carroll University.
The result moves Capital back to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. JCU improves to 7-2 (3-1 OAC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
JCU jumped all over their offensive possessions early, scoring six goals in less than 10 minutes to start the game.
Finally, Cap settled down and got two back before the end of the first quarter with goals by
Jake Belt and
Charlie Howenstine.
From there, the second and third quarters mellowed out from both teams as JCU hit four goals to Cap's three in those stanzas. The Comet tallies came from
Robert Smith,
Jacob Poole and Howenstine again.
Unfortunately for Cap, the fourth quarter went scoreless as JCU tacked on three more for the 13-5 win.
THE NUMBERS
The loss didn't come due to a lack of chances today as the Comets out-shot the Blue Streaks 42-39.
Charlie Howenstine had a high-performing offensive day with two goals and an assist. He now has 29 assists this season, just two away from tying CJ Hughes' single-season record of 31.
Jacob Poole,
Jake Belt, and
Robert Smith accounted for the other goals, while
Aiden Manning and
Brenden Pelton dished out assists.
The Comets didn't collect ground balls at their usual rate, but were led by
Freddy Noday and
Mason Spaulding who had four each.
James Howenstine added three, while a host of players had two each.
In causing turnovers,
Dylan Comella and
Mason Spaulding led the way with two each.
James Howenstine,
Aiden Manning,
Ethan Adkins,
Charlie Howenstine,
Robert Smith,
Gino Nave and
Drew Bolen all caused one.
Freddy Noday (9) and
Arnold Fitzharris combined for 10 faceoff wins.
Sam McInturf made 13 saves, bringing his season number to 145. In his career, the senior net-minder has made 407 career saves, a milestone he surpassed in today's game.
