COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team got on the board early, rode the coattails of a stellar start from
Ethan Pollack and got the eventual game-winning runs on a towering home run from
Christopher Rockwell to earn a 3-2 win over the visiting Ohio Christian Trailblazers on Wednesday afternoon.
The Comets, who now improve to 6-14 overall on the year, scheduled the game at Clowson Field for today on a last-minute basis after the program was initially supposed to travel to Circleville yesterday. Travel arrangements worked out for OCU to make the trek to Columbus for the rescheduled game.
With weather in the forecast, the game began at the atypical 1 p.m. on a weekday. Thanks to a stellar pitcher's duel across the first five and a half innings, the game hit the official mark before rain would eventually end the game in the top of the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the second inning,
Christopher Rockwell got the Comets going with a single to left center that dropped between the shortstop and center fielder. He then moved to second on a balk and scored moments later as
Logan White singled to left center.
After the run, Capital and OCU both remained relatively tame at the plate as the game went without another run until the bottom of the sixth inning.
With the lead, Capital starting pitcher
Ethan Pollack continued to cruise on the mound. In the top of the fourth, Pollack struck out the side and then followed it up by striking out the first two batters of the top of the fifth inning. In total, Pollack who eventually earned the win – moving him to 2-2 on the year – finished the game throwing five full innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out eight hitters.
A brilliant no-hit top of the sixth came from
Adam Frump. The righty struckout two in a 1-2-3 inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Capital got two more runs thanks to Rockwell's moon shot to left field.
Ben Stevens led off the inning by getting plunked by a pitch and was replaced by
Josh Gilmore on the basepaths. Rockwell then took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to put Cap ahead 3-0.
The Trailblazers then got two back in the top of the seventh inning making the score 3-2, however,
Brennon Newell was able to work out of the jam to end the inning.
Starting the top of the eighth inning, lightning rolled in the area and was followed by a heavy rain that eventually led to the game being finalized.
All-in-all, Capital recorded eight hits – three of which went to Rockwell and two of which went to White.
Hunter Wilson,
EJ Santana, and
Ryne McKinney accounted for one each.
In relief of both Pollack and Frump,
Joey Womble threw a third of an inning and was followed by Newell who tossed two-thirds of a frame. Newell was credited with the save, preserving the Comet win.
