COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team took on Ohio Northern on Sunday afternoon after having the would've-been Saturday doubleheader pushed back a day due to inclement weather. While there was no rain in the forecast, the weather wasn't much better as the Comets faced uncharacteristic late-April temps in the 40s with heavy cloud cover. The day didn't improve much with the results on the field going in favor of ONU 12-4 and 19-6. Capital drops to 6-23 (0-14 OAC) while Ohio Northern moves to 22-10 (10-4 OAC).
The Comets cracked the scoreboard first in game one, plating one.
Cade Anderson had reached on a single to third base prior, and then stole second during the next batter. The throw down from the catcher was a wild one and ended up in center field, prompting Anderson to take third. The throw to third from the center fielder was also off target, letting Anderson trot home uncontested. Ohio Northern nullified the run with eight of their own in the top of the second. CU would score again in the bottom of the inning via a double by
Kielan LaMarr that knocked in
Tristan Burns. That was the last Capital run scored until the ninth, with ONU scoring four in the time being. Cap plated two in the ninth, first on a sac fly to center from
Hunter Wilson that brought in
Ryne McKinney, then an Anderson single that scored
Ty Clifton. The final score would wind up an unfavorable 12-4.
Game two wasn't going Capital's way from the beginning as ONU notched one in the top of the second and four in the top of the third to take an early 5-0 lead. Capital put up two in the bottom of the third with a Clifton double that scored
Justin Witherspoon and
Robby Harrison, but Ohio Northern added four more in the forth, one in the fifth, and another four in the seventh before CU finally broke the streak with one run in the bottom of the seventh. That run was batted in by
Connor Feeney who singled, scoring Witherspoon. ONU would go on to add an additional five in the top of the eighth, followed by three from Capital in the ensuing frame. A double by Witherspoon plated
Ben Stevens. Clifton then knocked in Wilson with Burns also scoring due to an error on the play. The game was called after eight innings, 19-6.
