DELAWARE, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team took the short trip north to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, taking part in a late-season non-conference doubleheader with the Battling Bishops. Despite the Comets getting quite a few runners on base and across the plate throughout the day, OWU always seemed to have an answer, winning both contests 10-16 and 10-5.
Capital falls to 6-26 on the season, still 0-14 in the OAC.
Ohio Wesleyan moves to 16-16, 3-9 in the NCAC.
GAME ONE (CAP 10-16 OWU)
Ohio Wesleyan was first to crack the scoreboard in game one, putting up three in the bottom of the first. In the second,
Grayson Gulley walked with the bases loaded which brought in
Tristan Burns. Next,
Kielan LaMarr singled down the left field line to plate both
Ryne McKinney and
Christopher Rockwell. Finally,
Cade Anderson singled to center which brought around Gulley to score, 4-3.
OWU retook the lead in their half of the frame with six runs of their own, making it a 9-4 ballgame. Capital crossed the plate next in the fourth following a solo home run by LaMarr – his second of the season – to narrow the gap to 9-5. Unfortunately, OWU would cancel this out with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning, 14-5.
Capital got another one across in the fifth, this coming via a sac fly RBI by Rockwell, plating
Logan White. Ohio Wesleyan answered yet again in the bottom of the inning, scoring two more to bring it to 16-6. The Comets had their final say in the top of the seventh, scoring four in what was the final frame of the game. First, Burns singled through the right side, allowing White to score his second run of the day. Next, Gulley and LaMarr both singled, plating Santana and then Burns. Finally LaMarr stole second, prompting an errant throw by the catcher which allowed Gulley to get home and bring the game to its final scoreline of 16-10.
GAME TWO (CAP 5-10 OWU)
The second game started in much the same way as the first, with Ohio Wesleyan putting up three runs in the bottom of the first again. And once again Capital responded with four runs in the top of the second. The first run of the game for the Comets came via a
Connor Feeney hit by pitch with the bases loaded which brought in
Ty Clifton from third. Next,
Kielan LaMarr reached on a fielder's choice, plating
Tristan Burns. The third run came across on a productive
Hunter Wilson groundout to second that allowed Feeney to cross the dish. Finally, the last run came across on a
Ryne McKinney single to left field that scored
Logan White and gave Capital a 4-3 lead.
Again, OWU responded in the bottom half of the inning, this time scoring two. Cap would add a fifth run in the fourth on a White single to center that brought in Wilson, tying the game at 5-5. Unfortunately for the Comets, this would be their last run of the day. Ohio Wesleyan would add five more before the game's end at 10-5.
