COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team split with the University of Mount Union today, winning the opening game 2-1 before falling 8-0 in the second contest.
Capital's overall record moves to 10-14 and 2-8 in the OAC. Mount Union moves to 22-6 overall and 7-3 in conference.
GAME ONE: Capital wins 2-1
Capital garnered a run in both the first inning and second inning to take an early 2-0 lead that would prove to be enough in a low-scoring win for the Comets.
In the first inning,
Lexie Leggett tagged yet another home run, her 12th of the season. Leggett caught an inside pitch and hit it over the left field fence just on the right side of the foul pole.
The Comets then came back for more in the bottom of the second as
Krislyn Bayles led off the inning with an infield single. She then moved to third thanks to a ground out by
Liz Stonerock and a single by
Emma Gant. With runners on the corners, Gant attempted to swipe second and was caught in a rundown. Before she was tagged out, Bayles sprinted home for the second Comet run of the game.
From then on, Capital pitcher
Brianna Shearer kept the Purple Raiders relatively quiet despite giving up a solo home run and scattering seven hits. She was able to limit the damage and hold the high scoring Purple Raiders to just a single run while striking out three. The win was her fifth of the year.
GAME TWO: Mount Union wins 8-0 (5 innings)
Mount Union got runs in the second, third and fifth innings to complete a five-inning run-rule win in the second game.
Despite being held scoreless, Capital got single hits from
Liz Stonerock,
Reese King and
Emma Gant to get themselves on base.
A group of four pitchers threw for the Comets as
Krislyn Bayles (L, 2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 K) got the start. She was followed by
Brianna Shearer (0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R),
Jessica Workman (2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 K) and
Kelcie Schnitzler (0.2 IP, 0 H).
NOTABLES
Lexie Leggett hit her 12th home run of the season in game one. The homer puts her at 24 in her career. The 12 this season is the second most in a single season in Capital history and just two away from the single-season record of 14 set by Devan Boggs in 2013.
The win over Mount in game one was just the second win for Capital over Mount since the 2018 season.
