COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team secured an important OAC-sweep of Wilmington College on Wednesday afternoon. The Comets took the first game 1-0 before claiming the second 4-3.
The results now improve Cap to 12-14 (4-8 OAC) and drop Wilmington to 11-17 (1-11 OAC).
GAME ONE: Capital wins 1-0
The Comets didn't necessarily hit all that well in the first game, but a big time triple to the right center gap from
Kyleigh Kirby scored
Reagan Irons in the bottom of the fifth inning for the game's only run. Irons previously walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on
Emma Sweetman's sac bunt.
The only other hit in the game came from
Liz Stonerock on a slicing line drive that got through the right side. Stonerock and
Krislyn Bayles joined Irons as those drawing walks in the game.
Just as the Wilmington pitching staff threw a solid game, Capital got a great outing from
Brianna Shearer. The senior picked up her sixth win of the season thanks to a complete game, three-hit shutout that saw her strikeout seven Quakers.
GAME TWO: Capital wins 4-3
Capital jumped out in front in just the first inning as
Liz Stonerock singled home
Kyleigh Kirby for a 1-0 lead. Kirby singled to lead off and moved to second on
Autumn Bridges' sac bunt.
From there, Capital got some hits but didn't score any more runs until the bottom of the fifth inning while trailing 2-1.
In that bottom of the fifth, Bridges led off the inning by reaching on an error and was followed by
Lexie Leggett who mashed her 13th home run of the season over the left field fence to put the Comets up 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cap added their fourth all-important run of the game thanks to a bit of small ball.
Reagan Irons led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on a wild pitch and a single from
Tiffany Zuelzke. On third, Irons scored on an RBI groundout by Kirby.
That run would prove to be the game winner as the Quakers got a third in the top of the seventh, but a bases-loaded strikeout from
Jessica Workman sealed the deal for the Comets. The strikeout gave Workman her first career collegiate save.
Krislyn Bayles started on the rubber and threw a full six innings. In that time, she allowed seven hits, three runs (one earned), and struckout three. She was followed by
Megan Mlinaric (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB), and
Jessica Workman (0.1 IP, 1 K).
NOTABLES
Lexie Leggett now has 13 home runs this season, just one round-tripper away from tying Devan Boggs' single-season record of 14 set in 2013.
