COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing at the home of the Columbus Clippers at Huntington Park, the Capital University baseball team packed a punch, but ultimately didn't quite have enough to overtake Muskingum on Wednesday afternoon. Despite a total of five home runs on the day, Capital fell via scores of 8-4 and 8-7 to the Muskies.
Capital's record slips back to 6-18 overall (0-8 OAC), while Muskingum improves to 14-9 (4-4 OAC).
Of the Comets' five home runs today,
Christopher Rockwell blasted four of them, including two in each game. During game one, Rockwell launched a pair of solo homers, while game two saw him hit both a three-run shot and a grand slam to account for all seven of Cap's runs. The two home runs in both games marked just the second and third times of his career in which he has hit two homers in the same game. Previously, he had hit two grand slams away to Heidelberg on April 2, 2021. Now with six home runs on the season, Rockwell adds his name to a five-man tie for the fourth most homers in a single season for Capital.
GAME ONE: Muskingum wins 8-4
Capital got ahead and played from in front, but a stretch of offense from the Muskies led them to eight runs across the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Capital's runs came courtesy of two solo homers by Rockwell and a two-run home run from
Logan White that scored
Cade Anderson.
The homer by White was the first of his season.
Curtis Clark started on the mound and threw six strong innings, scattering five hits, three runs (one earned), and three walks around. He ended with four strikeouts.
Casey Wilkins (0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB),
Adam Frump,
Brennon Newell (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R), and
Spencer Knight (1.0 IP, 1 K) picked up the relief.
GAME TWO: Muskingum wins 8-7 (11 innings)
The Comets got behind early in game two, trailing 5-0 after three innings. However, the big bat of
Christopher Rockwell got the Comets right back into the game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Rockwell slugged a three-run homer down the left field line to give Cap life. The bomb scored
EJ Santana and
Tristan Burns.
One inning later, Cap loaded the bases and Rockwell delivered yet again, hitting a grand slam to left center, scoring Burns,
Cade Anderson and
Hunter Wilson.
From there, Capital couldn't hold their lead late and eventually allowed Muskie to tie it at 7-7 and send the game to extras where Muskingum would find the winning run in the top of the 11th inning to seal the sweep.
Tyler Sickles started on the mound and shook off a rocky start, lasting five full innings and allowing eight hits, five runs (two earned) and a pair of walks, while striking out two.
Noah Bromberg (1 IP, 1 H),
Ethan Pollack (1 IP),
Kyle Bowles (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER), and
Garrett Montgomery (L, 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 K) picked up the relief.
