Box Score 2 BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Capital University volleyball team traveled to Bluffton University for a pair of matches on Saturday, with one coming against the host school, and the second coming against the University of Rochester.
In their first match of the day, Capital fell 3-1 to Bluffton before bouncing back and defeating Rochester in quick fashion, 3-0.
MATCH ONE: Bluffton wins 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-16)
Despite coming out strong in the first set, the Comets tapered off in sets two through four to fall to the Beavers of Bluffton.
In the first set, the Comets were out-attacked, but benefited from three service aces and a few blunders by the Beavers to claim the first stanza.
Jordyn Hoffman collected two aces, while
Abby Brunner had the third in the set.
After that opening frame, the Comet offensive efficiency dropped and the Beavers took the final three sets.
Lindsay Rich once again led the offense with eight kills. She was followed closely by
Alissa Holler and
Larissa Smith who landed six each.
The offense was run by
Reagan Willoughby and
Jordyn Hoffman. Willoughby put up 15 assists, while Hoffman set up 13.
Hoffman also led all players with four aces, while
Abby Brunner had three.
Defensively, Brunner had 15 digs, while Willoughby and
Paree Furness added 12 scoops each.
At the net,
Caleigh Hamby continued to excel, swatting away seven blocks.
Alissa Holler was just behind with four blocks.
MATCH TWO: Capital wins 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-23)
The second match of the day went much smoother for Capital as they emerged with a quick three-set victory over the University of Rochester.
In the first set, Capital attacked at an impressive .233 hitting percentage. This play helped lead to a total of 33 kills at the end of the match, led mostly by
Audrey James' efficient eight kills on 20 attacks for a .350 hitting percentage.
Alissa Holler connected on seven kills as well, while lindsay Rich rounded out the top three with six putaways.
Again, the offense fed off
Reagan Willoughby and
Jordyn Hoffman. Willoughby had 19 assists, while Hoffman had 10.
At the net, Capital had two total blocks, with both
Alissa Holler and
Audrey James splitting a block with
Caleigh Hamby.
In the back row,
Abby Brunner led the way with 19 digs. Both Willoughby and
Paree Furness added eight digs as well.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Larissa Smith and
Abby Brunner were both named to the All-Tournament team at the end of the two matches for their play today.
