Baseball Makes it Two-In-A-Row Against OCU

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team made it back-to-back wins on Thursday as they once again took on the Trailblazers of Ohio Christian University. The Comets mounted a comeback effort in the late innings, crossing the plate six times off of 10 hits, three walks, and two OCU errors en route to an 6-4 victory.

Cap moves to 7-15 on the season. OCU falls to 7-23.

Tyler Sickles took the hill for Capital to start the game. He struck out one in his two innings of work, giving up one run, two walks, and one hit-by-pitch.

Brennon Newell (1.0 IP), Colin Boldin (2.0 IP), Aaron Olech (0.2 IP), Bryant Caporale (1.1 IP), and Kyle Bowles bolstered the Comets out of the pen. Caporale would go down as the winning pitcher, his record now sitting at 2-0.

Garrett Montgomery came in to shut the door on the Trailblazers, his first save of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
OCU got on the board first, when a sac-fly from Colton Lee in the top of the first brought home Carter Hyde, 1-0.

It wouldn't take long for the Comets to retaliate. In the bottom half of the inning, a double into left-center by Ryne McKinney brought Brandon Barnette around to score, 1-1.

The next four innings would come and go quietly as it wouldn't be until the sixth inning when the next runner crossed the plate. The runner in question, OCU's Colton Lee, knocked one over the right field fence, bringing the score to 2-1. This would be the first of three runs scored in the frame for Ohio Christian. The next two came courtesy of singles by Par Rockhold and Andrew Daria. Heading to the bottom half of the inning, OCU led 4-1.

Once again, never count out the Comets. In the bottom of the inning, Cap would rally back to tie up the score. The first run came across via a single off the bat of Ben Stevens, driving in McKinney. Shortly thereafter, a single from Hunter Wilson scored Abram Sykora. Finally, Cole Callaghan drove one into left field to bring EJ Santana home, making it 4-4.

From then on it was all Comets. Cap would score one run in each of the next two innings to pull ahead permanently. In the seventh, Abram Sykora hit a sacrifice fly out to center field, bringing in Barnette. And in the eight, a sac-fly off the bat of Brendan Stinson gave Callaghan room to score from third, 6-4.

Garrett Montgomery took the mound in the top of the ninth to close it out. His 1-2-3 inning secured the save with the Comets on top 6-4.
