No. 8 BW Gets the Best of Capital Baseball

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite two quality starting pitching performances from the Capital University baseball team, the visiting No. 8 ranked Baldwin Wallace University took both games via scores of 17-4 and 13-4.

The pair of losses sets the Comets back to 7-17 overall and 0-6 in OAC play.

Game one started off pretty well for Capital behind the strong pitching performance of Curtis Clark. The right-hander tossed six full innings and allowed just six hits, three runs (two earned), and two walks. In the process, he struck out three BW hitters. Clark matched his longest outing of the year going six innings for the second time this year.

On the flipside, the Cap hitters got to BW starter Dawson Gabe, who only lasted five innings and allowed six hits and four walks. He was strapped with two unearned runs. The Cap offense first crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth as CJ Rockwell reached on an error and plated Ryne McKinney and Evan Rottman in the process.

Capital followed that up by tying the game in the bottom of the seventh as Hunter Wilson lofted a sac fly to center field that scored Logan White from third.

The Comets would score again in the bottom of the eighth inning as White knocked a base-hit to left field, scoring Josh Sagredo

Unfortunately, the game got away from the Comets as they finished the seventh inning tied 3-3 and lost 17-4 in game one. The Capital bullpen allowed 14 runs with nine coming across as earned. Ultimately, Brennon Newell would get the losing decision as his earned runs proved to be the deciding tallies.

Game two once again started well with a strong pitching performance. Despite allowing 10 hits and six earned runs, Tyler Sickles lasted 5.1 innings and tossed 106 pitches while working through the heart of the BW order multiple times unscathed. Sickles also punched out three Yellow Jackets. Unfortunately, the Cap offense couldn't support Sickles with enough runs and he was saddled with the loss.

The Comets scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the second inning off starting pitcher Aidan Bennett. Cap took advantage of Bennett's control issues and reached base with four walks, a hit-by-pitch and two singles to score their four runs. Josh Sagredo picked up a big two-RBI single that scored Abram Sykora and EJ Santana, while Cade Anderson and Logan White each plated a run via a free pass.

From there, the BW relief staff of Steve Spidell and Ethan Boyko slammed the door on the Capital hitting and allowed just one hit off the bat of Logan White in the seventh inning over the final 6.1 innings of play.
