COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the benefit of a stiff wind blowing out from the plate, the Capital University baseball team clobbered three home runs and scored a combined 14 times this afternoon. The homers came courtesy of
Logan White,
EJ Santana, and
Ryne McKinney – all in game one.
As Capital benefited from the wind, so did the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks as they combined for 32 runs and nine home runs on the day.
The Comets (7-19 Overall, 0-8 OAC) struggled to get a hold of JCU's game one pitching staff, as they were struck out 16 times – 11 times by the starting pitcher Mitchell Midea. Despite the punch outs though, Cap managed eight hits that included an RBI single from
Brandon Barnette in the fourth, a two-run homer by
EJ Santana in the sixth, a three-run homer by
Logan White in the seventh, and a solo shot by
Ryne McKinney in the eighth.
At the second time of asking, Capital was once again fanned double digit times – this time 10 times. Again, though, Capital scattered eight hits in the game, many of which came in the later stages of the game. The seven Capital runs were scored on a double from Barnette, a groundout by
Cole Callaghan, a single by
Brendan Stinson, a double by White, and a groundout by
Justin Witherspoon. An additional run crossed for Cap on a dropped fly by the JCU outfield.
The resulting decisions went to both Capital starting pitchers as game one was lost by
Connor Jones. Jones tossed 3.2 innings, conceding seven hits and five runs (four earned). He struck out three in his outing. Jones' relief came in the form of
Brennon Newell,
Gavin Vanhorn, and
Matt Miller. They combined for four strikeouts and seven earned runs. Game two was lost by
Kyle Bowles as he was hit for six earned runs in just an inning and two-thirds of work. He punched out two in his time on the mound. His relief came in a loaded form of
Justin Mason,
Bryant Caporale,
Aaron Olech,
Colin Boldin,
Spencer Knight, and
Garrett Montgomery. The bullpen combined for six strikeouts and allowed five earned runs.
