COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing in one of the midwest's premier minor league ballparks in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio, the Capital University baseball team rode two games worth of solid pitching to a split doubleheader with Muskingum University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Comets (8-20 overall, 1-9 OAC) had a big fifth inning to garner a 5-4 win in game one, before a modest six-hit game two saw Cap fall 2-1. Today's game one win marked the first OAC win in the head coaching tenure of
Scott Manahan.
At the dish,
Cole Callaghan led the way by reaching base safely six times. He collected four hits – two in each game – and two walks. He also scored once.
Hunter Wilson had three hits on the day, while scoring once in each game.
Logan White collected a hit in each game, which included a two-RBI single in game one.
Game one's starter was
Curtis Clark and he earned his second win of the season, by throwing five strong innings and conceding just five hits and four runs. He struck out four in his appearance. His relief blanked the Muskies over four innings, conceding just one hit and striking out three.
Gavin Vanhorn tossed two scoreless, while
Brennon Newell three two hitless. Newell was credited with the save.
Game two's starter
Connor Jones allowed just one hit and one walk over three innings of work, allowing one run.
Tyler Sickles worked three relief innings and no-hit the Muskies in his time on the bump. Both Jones and Sickles struck out three each.
Colin Boldin,
Aaron Olech, and
Garrett Montgomery combined for the final three innings of relief, scattering five hits and an additional run.
In game one, the Comets struck first as
Hunter Wilson scored on a play that saw
Connor Feeney draw a throw down to second. The Muskies then scored the next four before Cap responded in force with four in the bottom of the fifth. First
Brandon Barnette reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Cole Callaghan. Barnette and
Matt Anthony then both scored on
Logan White's two-run single.
CJ Rockwell delivered the game-winning run as he clubbed a double to left center, scoring White from first.
In the second game, Wilson once again scored for Capital as he alertly came home on a Muskie throwing error.
Brendan Stinson beat out a would-be double play, and in the process, the Muskingum shortstop overthrew first, allowing Wilson to score. Unfortunately, a single run in the first and in the seventh would be enough for Muskie to snag the day's split decision.
