ALLIANCE, Ohio – Despite some good moments, the Capital University baseball team fell in both segments of a two-part doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the University of Mount Union.
With the decisions, Capital now holds an overall record of 10-27, with an OAC mark of 2-14.
Game one went the way of the hosts 9-6, before the Purple Raiders hung on for the sweep with a 12-1 decision in game two.
On the day, four Comets collected two base hits each. Those players were
Brendan Stinson,
Connor Feeney,
CJ Rockwell and
Brandon Barnette. Additionally,
Ryne McKinney and
Cole Callaghan had one hit each.
Both Stinson and Rockwell had two RBIs in the first game, with Rockwell's coming courtesy of a two-run bomb to left field in the six inning.
On the mound, Capital got starts from
Connor Jones and
Curtis Clark. In game one, Jones lasted a strong 6.1 innings before being chased from the game after allowing nine hits and six runs.
Brennon Newell and
Kyle Bowles shared the relief efforts for Jones. Newell was saddled with the ultimate loss, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks. Bowles went one no-hit inning.
In the second game, Clark only managed to stay on the hill for 3.1 innings after allowing six runs on six hits. His cavalry of relief came in the form of
Gavin Vanhorn,
Justin Mason,
Aaron Olech,
Bryant Caporale, and
Spencer Knight. The bullpen combined for 4.2 innings where they allowed six more runs on a combined eight hits.
In the matinee affair, Capital carried a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning before eventually conceding the lead. The Comets had built their lead after falling behind 4-0 after two frames. In the fourth, Capital scored their first as
Connor Feeney banged into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to score
Brandon Barnette from third.
In the fifth, Capital tied the game as
Logan White hit an RBI groundout that scored
Abram Sykora. Then,
Brendan Stinson singled down the right field line to score both Barnette and
Cole Callaghan.
One inning later, in the top of the sixth,
CJ Rockwell clubbed his second homer of the year, a two-run shot to left.
Connor Feeney scored on the play to put the Comets ahead 6-4.
Unfortunately, Mount wasted no time tying the score in the seventh and eventually climbing the lead in the eighth – a 9-6 margin that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
In the nightcap, Mount Union proved to simply be the better team as Capital was held to just one run – a tally they scored in the top of the first – on two hits and seven walks.
The lone Comet score came on
Brandon Barnette's RBI single through the left side that scored
Cole Callaghan, who had led off with a lead-off single.
After just the first two at-bats, the Comets were held without a hit the remainder of the contest, and much of that credit goes to Mount starting pitcher, Dwayne Sumler, who threw 7.1 innings and struck out 14 Capital batters.
