GAMBIER, Ohio – The Capital University softball team continued their busy stretch of competition with a split decision at Kenyon College.
First, the Comets dropped game one by a 9-0 scoreline before taking the second game by a 4-0 shutout of their own.
In game one, Capital (3-13) was held to just one hit – courtesy of
Liz Stonerock – their only base runner in the game, credit to Kenyon's Nicole Bishay's near flawless five-inning shutout.
For the Capital pitchers,
Krislyn Bayles started the game and was strapped with the loss after tossing the first one and two thirds inning. Just two of the six runs she allowed were earned.
Kelcie Schnitzler finished the final three innings of the game allowing six hits and three runs. Both pitchers had one strikeout each.
Game two was a masterful pitching performance by
Brianna Shearer as she allowed just five hits and was under her own control the entirety of the match, not walking a batter. She also punched out four Kenyon hitters.
The Comet hitters gave Shearer the opportunity to work from in front early by scoring three runs in the top of the first garnering RBIs from
Krislyn Bayles and
Lexie Leggett before another baserunning play led to the third run.
Liz Stonerock led off the game with a single up the middle and then moved over to third on
Tiffany Zuelzke's sac bunt (and a Kenyon error). Bayles then grounded out to score Stonerock from third.
Lexie Leggett then followed up with a single to left field that scored Zuelzke (who reached on the aforementioned Kenyon error).
Kayedon Martin then singles up the middle to move Leggett over to third. With runners on the corners, coach Nagy called for the double steal. The Ladies threw out Martin, but Leggett scored on the play.
After scoreless softball through to the fifth, Capital added another run.
Tiffany Zuelzke singled with one out and moved around to score on
Lexie Leggett's RBI triple to the gap in right center. The run put the exclamation point on a much needed win for Capital.
All-in-all, Zuelzke, Leggett, and
Kelcie Schnitzler each collected two hits in game two. Stonerock and Martin accounted for the other two. Schnitzler's two hits came on a single and a triple in the top of the sixth – her first extra base hit in Capital colors.
The Comets will look to stay in the win column as they are currently scheduled to host Heidelberg on Tuesday, April 5th at Clowson Field. Weather forecasts for this week don't look promising, so any schedule updates will be made to athletics.capital.edu should they come available.
