COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team slugged out four home runs enroute to a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Miami-University Hamilton campus on Wednesday afternoon.
Capital took game one by a final score of 4-1, before turning around to claim the nightcap 4-0.
On the day, the Comets (5-25 overall) banged out 19 hits, four of which cleared the outfield fence for home runs. In game one,
Liz Stonerock cleared the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning for a two-run shot, her second of the season. In game two,
Lexie Leggett clubbed two homers, a two-run shot in the first and a solo bomb in the fifth.
Kayedon Martin went deep for a pinch-hit solo homer in the fifth as well.
On the pitcher's rubber,
Brianna Shearer earned her third win of the year with a complete game effort in game one, while
Krislyn Bayles won her first game of the season with a complete game shutout in the second affair. The duo combined to strike out eight Harriers on the day.
GAME ONE: Capital wins 4-1
In the bottom of the first,
Lexie Leggett reached via an error and scored almost immediately as
Liz Stonerock belted her second homer of the year – a high drive to left field.
In the third,
Kelcie Schnitzler had an RBI sac fly as she lifted a deep fly ball to left, deep enough to score Stonerock who had worked her way to third base after previously reaching by a fielder's choice.
In the fourth, Miami Hamilton scored one – an unearned run off a Cap fielding error.
Capital got the run back in the fifth as pinch hitter
Kayedon Martin drilled a single to left field. Martin was replaced by McKinniss on the base paths and McKinniss scored on an RBI single from
Lexie Leggett.
The insurance run would be enough to finish off the scoring, 4-1.
GAME TWO: Capital wins 4-0
The Comets got all four of their runs in the second game courtesy of three home runs to straight away center field.
In the bottom of the first,
Tiffany Zuelzke doubled to left and then scored as Leggett smacked her fourth homer of the year over the center field fence.
In the fifth inning, pinch hitter
Kayedon Martin and Leggett went back-to-back as Martin hit a moon shot to center – her second four-bagger of the season. Leggett then followed it up with a moon-shot of her own as the very next batter. The homer was her fifth of the year.
Krislyn Bayles was in control on the pitching rubber all game, working out of jams and setting down the Hamilton hitters when she needed it most. The start proved to be one of her best of the season and gave Bayles a much deserved first win of the year.
