COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball squared off with the University of Mount Union in their final games of the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon and dropped a pair of games.
The Comets concluded their season with an overall record of 5-27 and an OAC mark of 1-17. The lone conference win came in walk-off fashion over rivals Otterbein.
Through the two games, three players hit safely three times each in the form of
Tiffany Zuelzke,
Lexie Leggett, and
Hannah St. Clair. Additionally,
Kayedon Martin,
Kelcie Schnitzler and
Liz Stonerock had two base knocks each.
In the RBI category, Martin had two, while Stonerock,
Krislyn Bayles and Schnitzler all had one apiece.
In the pitching circle, Capital got complete games from both
Krislyn Bayles and
Kelcie Schnitzler. Bayles threw game one, while Schnitzler took care of the responsibility in game two. Unfortunately both pitchers were hit with the loss in their respective outing.
The play in game one was interrupted by rain in the middle of the top of the first inning. Mount Union plated two runs within the first four at-bats while steady rain fell at Clowson Field before the umpires finally made the call to pull the tarp. After a 20-25 minute rain delay, both teams re-took the game and continued play without any further interruption.
The Comets were led offensively this season by four players who hit .300 or better.
Liz Stonerock led the way with a .351 average, which included 33 hits, 10 doubles, two home runs, and nine RBIs.
Lexie Leggett was next with a .322 average on 28 hits, four doubles, one triple, and five homers.
Tiffany Zuelzke hit .315 on the year with 28 hits and five doubles.
Krislyn Bayles hit an even .300 with 24 hits and four doubles.
In the pitching category, Capital was roughed up a bit, but ultimately had solid work put in by
Brianna Shearer, Kirslyn Bayles and
Kelcie Schnitzler. The trio combined to strike out 115 opponent batters.
Without a senior on the roster this season, Capital is set up well to use this season as an experience builder to improve for the 2023 campaign.
