ADA, Ohio – In what was a one-goal game heading into the fourth quarter, the Capital University men's lacrosse team fell by a final score of 16-10 to the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (7-8 overall, 4-4 OAC) got yet another huge day of production from
Mason Spaulding as Capital's leading scorer bagged another five goals today, in addition to handing out three assists. Spaulding now leads the Comets with 42 goals this season. He's also second on the team with 11 assists.
Evan Frund was the lone other Comet to have multiple goals as he netted twice. The other tallies went the way of
Jack Scharner,
Jacob Poole, and Johnathan Kilgallon. Scharner, Poole,
Doc Crimmel,
Jake Belt, and
Chase Snyder each had an assist.
Lake Harris won 10 faceoffs on the day and collected a team-high six ground balls in the process. Poole was close behind with four pick-ups. Spaulding,
Cody Colon, Scharner, each had three.
As a unit, Cap forced seven ONU turnovers, with Snyder and Colon leading the way with two breakups each.
Sam McInturf made eight saves in the cage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital trailed early by two goals, but closed the first quarter on a high note as
Evan Frund dispatched his 26th goal of the year off a feed from Crimmel.
Out of the first quarter break, the Comets rattled off three goals to go up 4-2 with 4:23 left before halftime.
Mason Spaulding scored twice and Johnathan Kilgallon bagged one goal in the burst.
Unfortunately, the Polar Bears ended the first half on a three goal run of their own – with all three goals coming in the span of 11 seconds of game time. ONU headed to the break in front, 5-4.
Out of the halftime break, Ca scored first off another goal from Spaulding. ONU's John Lynn and Cap's
Jack Scharner then traded goals before ONU scored two in a row to move in from 8-6.
Mason Spaulding x2 and
Jacob Poole then traded goals with the Polar Bears before the last break period. By the time the high-scoring third quarter would end, Cap would find themselves trailing 10-9 going to the fourth.
There in the fourth quarter, ONU scored two quick goals, but
Evan Frund responded with his second of the game to give Cap hope at 12-10. Unfortunately, the Polar Bears netted the game's final four goals and claimed the 16-10 win.
THE OPPONENT
John Lynn led the hosts with four goals, while RIley O'Neal dished out four assists. Chad Claderwood had a team-high six ground balls on the heels of nine faceoff wins.
UP NEXT
The Capital men will wrap up their regular season next Wednesday, April 27th on the road against Heidelberg. The Comets have locked up a top-six finish this season, thus earning qualification to the OAC postseason tournament. Right now, the Comets sit 4-4 alongside Mount Union, just one game back from Otterbein who is 5-3. Therefore, the final regular season results on Wednesday will have important seeding implications for the tournament.
