MARIETTA, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, the Capital University softball team dropped a pair of games at Marietta College by scores of 9-1 and 6-4.
Capital, now 2-12 overall and 1-3 in the OAC, combined for 12 hits as a team through the two games.
Lexie Leggett led the way for Cap, collecting three hits – one of which was a two-run home run in game two.
Mishae Fouch contributed three hits of her own as well.
Liz Stonerock and
Krislyn Bayles added two hits as well. The other baseknocks were collected by
Hannah St. Clair and
Abby Gischel.
In game one, Marietta held the Comets scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Cap used a base running play to score their only run of the game.
Mishae Fouch led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sac bunt from
Karri Albertini. She then moved over to third on
Liz Stonerock's single to right field. With runners on the corners, Fouch and Stonerock attempted a double steal, where Stonerock was thrown out, and Fouch took home safely.
Unfortunately, one inning later, Marietta would score an important ninth run in the game, sealing the 9-1 win.
Brianna Shearer was struck with the loss in game one, throwing five innings and allowing nine runs (eight earned). She fanned two batters.
Capital jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two in the top of the first on
Lexie Leggett's second home run of the season.
Tiffany Zuelzke drew a walk and scored on Leggett's homer.
The Pioneers then tied the game 2-2 through the end of the third inning. Later in the sixth, Capital regained a 4-2 lead. Fouch once again reached via single and advanced around on a single from
Krislyn Bayles and a Pioneer error.
Hannah St. Clair then delivered a single that scored both Fouch and Bayles.
Unfortunately, Capital could not hold the lead as Marietta tied the game in the bottom of the sixth and then captured the 6-4 victory in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the seventh.
Krislyn Bayles pitched a complete game in the nightcap, allowing eight hits, six runs (five earned) and punching out two batters.
Capital will look to right the ship tomorrow as they travel to Kenyon for a pair of games with the Ladies. First pitch of game one is slated for 12 p.m.
