COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Thursday afternoon, the Capital University softball team dropped two straight games by scores of 7-1 and 12-3 to Wilmington College at Clowson Field.
Capital moves to 3-19 overall and 1-9 in OAC play after the pair of losses today.
The Comets struggled at the plate, only collecting five hits in each game. On the day,
Tiffany Zuelzke led the way with three base hits – including two doubles.
Liz Stonerock and
Kelcie Schnitzler each added two on the day as well.
Kayedon Martin had just one hit, but she sure made it count, sending a two-run home run over the left field fence – her first career collegiate home run. Martin followed up Stonerock's lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth inning in game two with her round-tripper.
The Quakers jumped all over the Capital pitching staff today, scattering 27 hits throughout the two games. In game one, they got to Cap starter
Brianna Shearer for 12 hits and six earned runs. Shearer did manage to fan nine Quakers in the game. In the second game,
Krislyn Bayles got the start and surrendered seven hits and six runs (three earned).
Kelcie Schnitzler tossed an inning and allowed six hits and six runs. Shearer came back to work in that game, throwing just over two innings and not conceding any further runs, while striking out six more.
All-in-all, it was a tough day for the Comets and they'll look to right the ship tomorrow as they travel up to the greater Cleveland area for the second time in less than a week as they visit John Carroll University. First pitch in University Heights is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow.
