Softball Drops Two Close Ones at BW

BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University softball team played a rare Sunday afternoon doubleheader against OAC opponent Baldwin Wallace this weekend due weather-related schedule readjustments. Despite keeping in close – even forcing extras in Game Two – the games got away from the Comets, 2-1 and 4-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

Capital now sits at 3-17 and 1-7 in conference play.

GAME ONE (CAP 1-2 BW)
Briana Shearer got the start in Game One and pitched the whole way for the Comets. She recorded three strikeouts, giving up eight hits, and two runs (none earned) in the losing effort.

The first five innings on the game came and went quietly with neither side able to cross the plate and find the advantage. In the sixth, however, Capital broke into the lead. It came with Lexie Leggett reaching base on a throwing error by the third-baseman, allowing Tiffany Zuelzke to come around and score, putting Cap up 1-0.

The lead would stay like this until the bottom of the seventh. That was when a throwing error off of a sacrifice bunt allowed the first BW run to cross the plate. The play also put a runner on third with no one out. Shortly thereafter, another Capital error allowed for the runner to break for the plate and Baldwin Wallace walked it off, 2-1.

GAME TWO (CAP 3-4 BW) [NINE INNINGS]
Krislyn Bayles pitched the entirety of the second game for the Comets. She struck out four, walked two, and gave up four runs (two earned) on 12 hits.

There was more action early on in this one as both teams scored in the first frame. It all started when Bayles doubled to right center bringing around Liz Stonerock for the first run of the game. A short time later, Bayles would score on a daring steal of home, giving Capital the 2-0 lead to start off the game. However, this lead was short lived as the Yellow Jackets scored three times in the bottom half of the inning.

Cap would get one back in the fourth as once again Bayles would cross the plate, this time coming off of a passed ball. The score now knotted at 3-3.

It would remain this way for five innings as neither team was willing to give an inch. At the end of seven, with the score still tied, it became clear that extra innings would be necessary to decide this one. In the bottom of the ninth, a single up the middle for BW brought the winning run around and provided another walk-off win for the Yellow Jackets.

UP NEXT
Capital now turns their focus to collecting some wins against Wilmington. That conference double-header will take place in Columbus at Clowson Field on Wednesday, April 13. Start times for those games are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
