Baseball Suffers at the Hands of Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The Capital University baseball team played visitor to Austin College on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the game by ten runs, 18-8. This is Capitals first loss since ending their four-game losing streak in Tuesday's contest. Capital now stands at 3-5 on the season.

Capital struggled to put together some power in this one, accounting for only two extra base hits. However, the ability to string together hits and free passes helped the Comets to put eight runs across on nine knocks, not a bad number for an evening outing.

The only problem was the opposing offense. Austin's Kangaroos pushed across 18 runs on nineteen hits including a six-run fifth inning.

Justin Mason started on the hill for the Comets, pitching two and a third, striking out two, walking three, and allowing four hits and three runs. He was backed up by Bryant Caporale (1.1 IP, 2 SO, 1 BB, 4 H, 3 R), Kaleb Stafford (0.2 IP, 2 SO, 2 BB, 3 H, 6 R), and Garrett Montgomery (3.0 IP, 8 H, 6 R). Mason was pinned with the loss, his first result of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got behind early, going scoreless for the first four innings. During this time, the 'Roos scored six.

In the fifth, Capital finally got on the board with a four-spot. Ryne McKinney got aboard after being hit by a pitch and then scored on EJ Santana's RBI double. Cade Anderson followed up with a double of his own, landing runners at second and third. Both Santana and Anderson scored as Kurt Maxwell delivered an RBI single through the left side. Later in the inning, Ethan Neal – who had reached on a fielder's choice – scored on Logan White's RBI single to center.

Capital added two more in the top of the sixth, but only after Austin had pushed six more across in the bottom half of the fifth inning. In the sixth, Kurt Maxwell delivered again, once again singling to left field and scoring two runs. Ryne McKinney and EJ Santana scored on the play after they reached via a HBP and a walk.

The Comets would push runs across in the top halves of the seventh and eighth innings, but they would be for a mere consolation as Austin finished off the run-rule in the bottom of the eighth.

In the seventh, Maxwell again reached, this time on a fielding error, allowing McKinney to score. Later in the eighth, McKinney drew a bases loaded walk that scored Ethan Neal, but the Comets could do no further damage in the inning.

THE OPPONENT
Max Danielsen got the start for Austin College, going five innings with five strikeouts, two walks, and three hits batsmen, as well as allowing four hits and six earned runs. This was his first result, and win, of the season.
