Baseball Falls to Eureka

IRVING, Texas – The Capital University baseball team suffered a tough loss against Eureka College on Thursday, falling to the Red Devils 18-6. This marks the Comets' second loss in a row and the second straight by ten or more runs. Capital is now left at 3-6 on the new campaign.

Freshman Tyler Sickles got the start for the Comets, his first start and third appearance of the season, and faced 20 batters. He went three and two-thirds innings, striking out five and giving up four free passes, as well as being responsible for six hits allowed and five earned runs. Sickles was credited with the loss, giving him a record of 0-1.

In terms of relief pitching, Cap saw four arms out of the pen. Colin Boldin pitched two-thirds of an inning (1 SO, 4 H, 3 ER). Brennan Newell threw for an inning and two-thirds (3 SO, 2 H, 1 ER). Aaron Olech (1 SO, 3 H, 4 ER) and Spencer Knight (2 H, 3 ER) mounted the hill for an inning apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital were set back in the top of the second by a 1-0 margin, but responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Brandon Barnette and CJ Rockwell collected back-to-back RBI singles in the inning.

The Comets tacked on a third run in the bottom half of the third, as Barnette once again delivered an RBI single. This time, he knocked home Logan White

The next two innings turned sour for Cap as Eureka got their bats working and scored 10 runs through the top halves of the fourth and fifth innings.

Cap would get a single run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but ultimately the damage had been too great to overcome. Ryne McKinney and Logan White each had an RBI single, and Barnette delivered for the third time today with an RBI double in the seventh. Barnette finished the game going 3-for-4 from the dish with three RBIs. McKinney and White also each finished with three hits apiece.

Eureka tacked on another seven runs in the top of the seventh and eighth combined, leading to the final 18-6 scoreline.
