LEXINGTON, Ky. – Despite fighting back to tie the score at 9-9 early on in the fourth quarter, the Capital University men's lacrosse team fell by a final score of 13-10 on Saturday evening.
In the game, the Comets (1-3) certainly shared the ball as eight players found the back of the cage.
Evan Frund and
Brenden Pelton each finished with two goals, while six others scored once each.
Highlighting the day for Capital was
Jack Scharner's four-point performance (one goal, three assists). What made his showing most impressive was the fact that it pushed him across the 100-point mark in his career. He now sits at 101 career points, sitting him sixth all-time in Cap history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Comets got out to a slow start as Transylvania (4-0) scored the first two goals of the game, but a quick strike from
Jon Gaglione got them back in action. Off the heels of Gaglione's goal,
Nathan Mork,
Evan Frund,
Brenden Pelton all scored within just under three minutes apart from each other.
Jack Scharner assisted on three of the four goals.
Unfortunately, the quick-fire offense by Capital slowed down and Transylvania out-scored the Comets 5-1 in the second quarter. Scharner netted his only goal of the game in the quarter.
In the third quarter, Capita flipped the script and went on another flurry of of scoring with three straight goals. This time,
Mason Spaulding,
Jacob Poole, and
Brenden Pelton combined for the three goals.
In the fourth,
Nathan Montgomery and
Evan Frund scored, but in the end the Pioneers did enough to make the difference on the final scoreboard.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Brenden Pelton claimed the leading goal scorer title on the team with his two-goal effort today. He now had nine on the season.
Mason Spaulding is right on his heels with eight goals.
Jacob Poole scored for the second consecutive game, marking his second career goal. His goal vs. Wooster was the first of his young collegiate career.
Doc Crimmel had a lighter day today, picking up just two ground balls. He recently eclipsed the 100 career ground ball mark earlier this season.
Lake Harris was busy on the faceoff today, winning 12 efforts and picking up nine ground balls in the process.
Sam McInturf registered 13 saves in the game, giving him 56 on the season. He now leads the OAC in the category.
THE OPPONENT
Bryce Lowe and Andrew Hamill each scored four goals for Transylvania. Topher Hays made 11 saves in the cage.
UP NEXT
Capital will take a week off before hosting Oberlin College on Saturday, March 12th at 4 p.m. The game is scheduled to start an hour after the women's contest vs. Hope concludes. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on the 12th.
