Softball Drops Twinbill at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University softball team traveled over to Denison University on Thursday night where they fell in consecutive five-inning games.

Capital, now 2-10 on the year, was on the wrong-end of 8-0 and 11-3 scores.

Offensively, the Comets were powered forward by Liz Stonerock who had two hits – one of which was a home run – and scored two runs. Tiffany Zuelzke also recorded two hits. The other hits went to Mishae Fouch, Hannah St. Clair and Abby Gischel. Gischel's single in the second inning and St. Clair's single in the fourth marked both ladies' first career base-knock.

Brianna Shearer started pitching game one where she was hit with the loss, throwing 4.2 innings and conceding 11 hits and eight runs (four earned). She did strike out three Big Red hitters.  Sydney Silverstine nearly hurled a flawless game for Denison in game one, surrendering just one hit and two walks. The lone hit went to Stonerock – a single up the middle in the top of the first inning.

Kelcie Schnitzler started game two for Capital, tossing 3.1 innings. She allowed nine hits and seven runs (five earned). She struck out one in the process. Hannah St. Clair made her collegiate debut in the pitcher's circle, throwing two-thirds of an inning and five hits and four runs.

Game two went much better for Cap at the plate, but still did not yield many runs. Capital scattered six hits, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch throughout the five innings of play while scoring three runs.
Stonerock led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a sac fly from Lexie Leggett. Cap would fail to score another run until the top of the fifth inning where they would plate two.

Having one of her better days at the plate, Stonerock led off the fifth with her first career collegiate home run – a solo shot to left. Two batters later, Kayedon Martin drew a walk and worked her way to third after a walk from Leggett and a HBP by Mishae Fouch. With the bases loaded, an RBI fielder's choice from Kelcie Scnitzler scored Martin from third.

Unfortunately, three quick runs in the bottom half of the fifth gave Denison the eight-run edge, good enough to end the game with the final score 11-3.
