Baseball Collects 14 Hits and 12 Runs, But Falls to Ohio Christian

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a beautiful, breezy Wednesday afternoon, the Capital University baseball brought the lumber, but ultimately could not get the job done in a slugfest with Ohio Christian University. After nine long innings and 34 combined hits the final score read 15-12 in favor of the visiting Trailblazers.

A day after struggling to get the bats going, the Comets (5-13) banged out 14 hits, drew five walks, and scored 12 runs in a game that was played at Panther Valley Baseball Field on the campus of Ohio Dominican University.

Logan White, Cade Anderson, and Ryne McKinney led the way in hitting, as the trio collected three hits a piece. White made the impact, however, collecting four RBIs – three of which came on a sixth inning home run to right center. Both Connor Feeney and Cole Callaghan also recorded multi-hit afternoons with two each.

Four Comets spent time on the mound with Garrett Montgomery ultimately getting saddled with the loss. He threw two whole innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned). He did punch out one Trailblazer in the effort. Kyle Bowles, Colin Boldin, and Brennon Newell combined for the remainder of the game. Newell threw the final two frames, conceding just one hit and no further damage. Bowles and Boldin each had one strikeout each.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital suffered an early setback as Ohio Christian hit the scoreboard for six first inning runs. Despite the deficit, Capital fought back, scoring three of their own in the bottom half. Logan White, Ryne McKinney and Brandon Barnette all record RBIs in the frame. Barnette's ribbie came on a sac fly, one his many deep flyouts on the afternoon. Barnette did everything he could do to make a statement while at the plate, but ultimately could not find a safe landing, with three flyouts to the warning track.

In the second frame, OCU hit the scoreboard for three more runs, but Cap once again responded with two this time. The Comets loaded the bases on a walk from Brendan Stinson – one of three for him on the day – and back-to-back singles from Cade Anderson and White. There, Stinson scored on a wild pitch and White scored on an RBI groundout from CJ Rockwell. The score after two innings read 9-5 toward OCU.

The visitors would add another four runs across the next three innings, leading to a 3-run fifth for Cap. CJ Rockwell picked another RBI, this time on a single to left before Ryne McKinney banged a single up the gut for another RBI. A couple batters later, Brandon Barnette scored on an RBI single from Cole Callaghan

Trailing 13-8, Cap continued to make things interesting, scoring three more in the bottom of the sixth as Logan White drilled a line-drive over the fence in right center field for a three-run homer – his first of the year. The bomb would score Hunter Wilson and Stinson, both of whom reached via four balls.

In the bottom of the seventh, Capital got one more run on an unearned run from Cole Callaghan. Callaghan, who reached via a bunt single, scored as Ben Stevens reached on an error by the OCU third baseman. Unfortunately, the run would prove to be the last Capital would plate, ending the game 15-12.
