Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ommert and Brewer Tally Double-Doubles in Women’s Basketball Win Over Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – In what proved to be a difficult match-up for the Capital University women's basketball team early on, momentum quickly changed as the Comets defeated Heidelberg University by a final score of 67-61 on Wednesday evening.

Capital (5-16, 2-11 OAC) picked up the big win for the team, moving them ahead of Heidelberg (3-18, 2-12) in the conference standings.

The Comets were buoyed forward by a quartet of big time performances on the floor. Maddie Dougoud led the team with 16 points off the bench on nearly 50% shooting the ball. Brooke Ommert was next on the team with a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double on 6-of-11 shooting the ball. Laney Murphy then contributed 14 points. Demi Brewer then contributed a double-double of their own with 10 rebounds and 10 assists – a new career-high for the junior.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Capital came out of the gates playing okay in the first quarter, but didn't shoot the ball nearly as well as they would've liked. Nine chances from the free throw line in the first 10 minutes helped Cap stay within touching distance of the Comets at 18-14 at the first break.

In the second quarter, Capital got going as they out-scored Heidelberg by a 16-12 margin, knotting the score at 30-30 at the half.  Maddie Dougoud was playing with an edge, scoring 12 of her team-high 16 points in the first half alone.

In the third quarter, Capital was all "foot on the gas", out-scoring Capital by seven points to establish control of the tempo. Shooting an even 7-of-14 from the floor, the team also knocked down 8-of-9 from the charity stripe, leading to a solid period of play for the Comets. A layup from Maddi Weiland got things going for the quarter, but from there, it was a balanced effort as nearly every player who touched the floor in the quarter for Capital contributed in the scoring column.

Head into the final 10 minutes of action, the Comets needed to keep the Student Princes at bay. They did just that as they shot 6-for-12 from the floor, nearly matching Heidelberg's production. Late on, Capital's Brooke Ommert hit a clutch 3-pointer with 1:09 remaining and a jumper with 26 seconds left to all but clinch the win for Capital. Nicole Flock iced the game with a pair of free throws, settling the final score at 67-61 in favor of the good guys.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Comets out-rebounded Heidelberg 57-35. That's right – 57 rebounds from Capital. The 57 boards by far set a season-high for Capital. The team took a stab at the team record (65, set during the 1986-87 season), but came up short in the end.

Demi Brewer has continued to dish for Capital as she set her new career-high in assists with 10 tonight. She paired that with 10 rebounds, also a career-high.

Brooke Ommert's double-double was her first career of the sort. Tonight, she knocked down 15 points and recorded 10 rebounds.

THE OPPONENT
Hallie Rogers scored a game-high 18 points, followed closely by Lily Sweeney with 16 points. Bailey Walter led the Student Princes in rebounds with nine.
