Women’s Basketball Trades Blows with Mount Union in #Play4Kay Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's basketball team hosted the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Saturday for the Play4Kay Game benefitting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Senior Day. Despite hanging with the Raiders for the majority of the game, a slow fourth quarter from the Comets allowed Mount Union to make a final push to put Capital away, 57-45.

The Kay Yow Cancer Fund works to fight against all cancers affecting all women by working together as a TEAM. Play4Kay events are hosted all around the country in order to raise money for the fund as well as honor those who have survived their fight with cancer and remember those who have been lost.

Today also marked senior day for the Capital women as seniors Brooke Ommert and Emma Burns were honored prior to tip-off.

Across Ommert's time on the Comets she has averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and nearly an assist per game. She has a career shooting percentage of nearly 50 percent. She has been a veteran force on the team this season, starting every game and providing 8.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as well a total of 40 assists and 34 steals.

Throughout Burns' career as a Comet she averaged 10.1 points per game, 2.7 rebounds, and an assist per game. She has a career shooting percentage of 37 percent including 40 percent from behind the three-point line. She has been a leader in multiple ways on the team this year, spending most the season in an unofficial coaching role as she was injured in just her third game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Overall, the game was fairly tightly contested, with Mount Union not breaking away until late in the fourth quarter. Following the first quarter the Comets were facing a four-point deficit. Laney Murphy led the squad in period, scoring half of the teams points. However, Capital was able to turn the tide in the second and gain those four points back. The teams would head to the locker rooms at halftime knotted at 26.

In the second half Mount Union gained control once again, taking advantage of seven second chance points, and breaking out to another four-point lead by the end of the third quarter. In the fourth, Capital struggled to keep up and would ultimately allow Mount Union to outscore them by eight points. This, added to the four-point deficit following the third quarter, totaled 12 points of separation between the teams, with Mount Union collecting the win 57-45.
