Football Drops Game to John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Capital University football team traveled to the Great Cleveland area on Saturday afternoon where they were upended by the No. 25 ranked John Carroll University Blue Streaks by a final score of 42-10.

Capital's lone first half points came courtesy of yet another special teams set-up. The Comets' first offensive drive stalled out and forced the Comets to punt. Tyler Terrell's 33-yard punt was then muffed by JCU return-man Tyler Mintz. The muff was then recovered by Capital's Nate Younker – a near carbon copy of the set-up to Capital's first score a week ago against Mount Union.

With the improved field position, Capital worked their way down into the red zone. Unfortunately, some strong defense by the Blue Streaks kept the Comets out of the end zone. However, despite not finding the touchdown, Capital got on the board courtesy of Tyler Terrell's 26-yard field goal to make the score 7-3 early.

Despite the improved drive, Capital could not get back on the board in the first half as the Blue Streaks built out a 35-3 lead by the halftime interval.

Out of the break, Capital took their first drive to the end zone as they marched 85 yards down field on a solid drive that was capped off by a one-yard touchdown by Jonathan Williams. Big plays on the drive to set up the score came on a 35-yard completion from Trevor Harrison-Rawn to Aralius Walters, a 16-yard pass to Eddie Thomas, and a 18-yard connection to Sam Pickett

Capital had another drive that stalled out in the end zone during the fourth quarter as they marched down the field, thanks in part to some John Carroll penalties. Two big pass plays from Trevor Harrison-Rawn to Mike Elmore and Dom Glenn helped lead the way for the offensive pick-ups on that try.

Throughout the second half, the Comet defense stepped up and held the Blue Streaks to just one score and only 133 yards of gain in the entire second half. In the first half, John Carroll managed 35 points and 392 yards for comparison.

The Comet offense scored 10 points on the Blue Streaks defense – the most by any OAC opponent this season. The Blue Streaks' opponents to this point had included Heidelberg, Baldwin Wallace, Marietta, Wilmington, and Ohio Northern – three of which Capital is yet to play this season.

THE NUMBERS
Trevor Harrison-Rawn passed for 177 yards on 16 completions as the quarterback.

Numerous receivers recorded catches with Eddie Thomas, Aralius Walters Jr. Mike Elmore, and Bennett Zerby each having multiple receptions. Thomas and Elmore accounted for three each for a combined 72 yards to lead the way.
Drew Engle rushed the ball a team-best 13 times for 35 yards. Jonathan Williams pounded in the only TD of the day for Capital.

Defensively, Louie Hoersten led the defense with 11 tackles – his  second straight week with double-digit stops. Quentin Gehm made seven tackles and James Curtis and Chris Johnson were in on a combined 10 tackles.  Curtis and Marvin Jean-Denis got to the Blue Streaks in the backfield once each.

Tyler Terrell was called upon throughout the day as he punted six times for 234 yards, an average of 39 yards per punt. On kickoffs, Terrell hit three for an average of 41.7 yards per kickoff. Terrell was also perfect on his fourth field goal of the year – a 26-yarder in the first quarter – and his 14th PAT of the season. He has yet to miss a kicking try this season.

THE OPPONENT
John Carroll's Joe Collins threw for 342 yards and four touchdowns in the game.

Brennan Fugh led the receiving corps with eight catches for176 yards and two touchdowns.

Demarious Goodwin and Evan McVay carried the bulk of the rushes, combining for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

UP NEXT
