WESTERVILLE, Ohio – On Wednesday afternoon, the Ohio Athletic Conference announced the first golfer of the week award and the recipient was none other than Capital University's
Shane Murphy.
Murphy was the medalist at this past weekend's Gatorade Collegiate Invite hosted by the College of Wooster at Zoar Village Golf Course. Not only did Murphy shoot well enough to win the event, he carded the program's second and fourth lowest scores in history. At the end of round one, Murphy submitted a score of 70 and followed it up on Championship Sunday with a 68. His combined score was good for a six under par, 138.
Murphy's score was only one of five lights out showings for the Capital golf team this past weekend, as the team submitted scores of 283 and 282 over the two rounds. Both scores broke the school record for a single 18-hole round as a team. The two scores combined for a 36-hole score of 565, a new program record, smashing the previous record by 35 strokes, set in 2015. The 565 score also set a new tournament record for the Gatorade Collegiate Invite.
The golfer of the week honor is Shane's first of his career. Murphy will be back in action with the team this weekend at the Belterra Intercollegiate hosted by Hanover College. The tournament is scheduled to run Sunday to Monday.
