COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team fought until the very end on Friday night at Bernlohr Stadium, unfortunately it was not enough as the Grove City Wolverines emerged victorious, netting a golden goal in overtime in a 2-1 win.
It was everything one could hope for out of a Friday night soccer match. The stadium was rocking, the fans were getting into it, the lights were on, and the play on the field was nothing short of nail-biting. Both teams would go back and forth throughout the entire match, trading possession and leaving it all on the field.
Grove City struck first as Anna Jenkins would head in the go ahead goal only 15 minutes into the game, plucking it out of the air from a corner kick.
20 minutes later Capital would strike back when junior
Avery Hart floated one from outside the box, over the keeper's hands, and into the top left corner of the goal. Not only was this Hart's first goal of the new campaign, but it was also the team's. A cry of relief resounded throughout the stadium and the Purple and White huddled together in celebration.
The second half would be another back and forth affair. Both teams would battle it out for another 45 minutes with neither one quite able to find the edge. The final whistle would blow with a 1-1 tie on the scoreboard.
Following the scoreless first overtime period, both teams were eager for a goal, trading chances and doing everything they could to pull ahead. The final push for Grove City came in the 101st minute when Anna Jenkins netted her second goal of the game and put Grove City on top for good.
The Capital women look to bounce back tomorrow night, September 11, at 7 p.m. as they take on Mount Saint Joseph at Bernlohr Stadium.
